VALERIA MORICONI
A leading figure of 20th-century theatre and cinema, she is remembered for her intense and emotional acting, capable of bringing complex characters to life with great authenticity
Valeria Abruzzetti, her maiden name, was born in Jesi on November 15, 1931. She took the name Valeria Moriconi after her early and brief marriage to the painter Aldo Moriconi. Her passion for the stage emerged in her hometown, where she made her debut at the age of 16 in an amateur company.
After moving to Rome with her husband, she began working in cinema in 1953, taking on small roles. In 1957 she made her professional theatre debut, discovered by Eduardo De Filippo, who cast her as the lead in his play De Pretore Vincenzo. In the 1960s, together with Glauco Mauri, Mario Scaccia, and director Franco Enriquez—her partner both professionally and personally—she was part of the “Compagnia dei Quattro”, which staged important works by both classical and contemporary authors.
Some of her most memorable performances were in maternal roles, which definitively established her in the 1980s and 1990s: from Emma B vedova Giocasta by Savinio to Filumena Marturano by De Filippo and Medea by Euripides.
She returned to Jesi seriously ill, where she died on June 15, 2005.
