The city walls of Jesi are dotted with turrets and watchtowers, defensive structures that for centuries have protected the town and still bear witness to its fortified heritage.
Piazza Baccio Pontelli is dominated by the imposing bulk of the Torrione di Mezzogiorno, a tower built in 1454 by the architect after whom the square takes its name.
Polygonal in shape, it represents the typical 15th-century tower. It was once used as a depot for ammunition.
From the square it is possible to see one of the short sections of the watch patrol path which has remained intact with a covered part sided with arched windows.
