Palazzo della Signoria and Planettiana Library

Housed in the Renaissance Palazzo della Signoria, built by the Sienese architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, the Municipal Biblioteca Planettiana was founded in 1859 thanks to Marquis Angelo Ghislieri who donated his own library. It took its name after the precious collection of books and archives the Pianetti family donated to the Municipality of Jesi.

It houses many old volumes, manuscripts, incunabula and books published in the sixteenth century, all donated and deposited by private citizens and public institutions. Together with the modern volumes, they form a quantitatively and qualitatively significant collection of books. The Municipal Library also preserves the municipal historical archive and several archives of private and public institutions, which are frequently referred to for studies and research on local history and more.

Together with the preservation of old books and archives, a public reading section has been forming over the years. Its collections have been enriched through acquisitions and donations and these volumes can be borrowed or consulted on site. Not only books but also newspapers and magazines, photos and tapes for blind people enrich this collection as well as the special section dedicated to young people. Moreover, the library organises periodically reading promotion events for people of various age ranges.

Since 1990 the Biblioteca Planettiana has agreed with the National Library Service, the network of Italian libraries connected together through shared cataloguing and allowing interlibrary loan among the Italian culture institutions.
