A man of <strong>many interests<\/strong> and a lover of adventure, he was a <strong>researcher<\/strong>, explorer, ethnographer, and <strong>anthropologist<\/strong> (his 1889 essay \u201cThe Gypsies. History of a Wandering People\u201d still represents a milestone in Romani studies), as well as a <strong>diplomat<\/strong>, journalist, and politician. After <strong>studying law<\/strong>, he <strong>obtained<\/strong> a <strong>lectureship in political economy<\/strong> and statistics at the University of Camerino, which he left after just two years to pursue a political career. In <strong>1883<\/strong>, as a provincial councilor, he <strong>founded<\/strong> the <strong>newspaper<\/strong> \u201c<strong>Il Popolo Marchigiano<\/strong>\u201d in Ancona at his own expense.<\/p><p>In <strong>1885<\/strong>, he joined the<strong> Rumeli uprising<\/strong> against Serbia, contributing to the <strong>creation of the Principality of Bulgaria<\/strong>.
