On <strong>December 26,<\/strong> Constance <strong>gave birth to Frederick II<\/strong>. According to tradition, the <strong>birth<\/strong> took place <strong>under a tent<\/strong> in Piazza San Floriano\u2014now <strong>Piazza Federico II<\/strong>\u2014in the presence of the city&#8217;s civil and religious authorities.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"2\"><strong>King of Sicily <\/strong>from <strong>1196<\/strong>, he was placed under the guardianship of Pope Innocent III from 1198. Elected <strong>King of Germany<\/strong> in <strong>1212<\/strong>, he received the <strong>crown<\/strong> of the <strong>Holy Roman Empire<\/strong> from the new Pope, Honorius III, in 1220. He came into conflict with the papacy by disregarding calls for a crusade and was <strong>excommunicated<\/strong> in <strong>1226<\/strong>. In 1228, he led an expedition to the Holy Land, during which he successfully reclaimed Jerusalem by negotiating a peace treaty with the sultan. In Germany, he granted wide autonomy to the high nobility at the expense of the lesser nobility, the cities, and ultimately the crown itself, whose authority was severely limited. Placing himself at the head of Italian Ghibellinism, he engaged in a <strong>twenty-year conflict<\/strong> with the <strong>papacy<\/strong>\u2014by which he was <strong>excommunicated<\/strong> again in <strong>1239<\/strong>\u2014and with the Guelph forces, particularly the free communes of northern Italy. Although he defeated them at the <strong>Battle of Cortenuova<\/strong> in <strong>1237<\/strong>, he was later beaten by them at the subsequent <strong>Battle of Parma<\/strong> in <strong>1248<\/strong>. He <strong>died<\/strong> at <strong>Castel Fiorentino<\/strong>, near Lucera, in <strong>1250<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"2\">The <strong>Frederick II Network<\/strong> (<i data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"26\">Rete Federiciana<\/i>) encompasses <strong>towns<\/strong> and <strong>villages<\/strong> across the <strong>Marche region<\/strong>. Although tangible artifacts directly linked to Frederick II can no longer be seen here, these places safeguard an intangible heritage tied to the Swabian emperor that deeply influenced the development of the region&#8217;s cultural identity. Stretching from <strong>Jesi<\/strong> to the <strong>Sibillini<\/strong> <strong>Mountains<\/strong>, the proposed itinerary embraces <strong>walled settlements<\/strong>, <strong>monasteries<\/strong>, <strong>urban centers<\/strong>, <strong>palaces<\/strong>, and <strong>churches<\/strong> that gave birth to courageous figures\u2014some supporting, others opposing the emperor.
