As a child, he <strong>moved<\/strong> with his family to <strong>Milan<\/strong>, and later emigrated to <strong>Switzerland<\/strong>, <strong>Portugal<\/strong>, and finally <strong>England<\/strong>, where he began his career as a journalist before making his <strong>debut<\/strong> as a writer of <strong>historical<\/strong> and <strong>adventure<\/strong> <strong>novels<\/strong>.<\/p><p>In <strong>1904<\/strong> he published <strong><em>The Knight of the Tavern<\/em><\/strong>, the first novel in a long series of works including fiction, plays, and essays. In <strong>1921<\/strong> he released <strong><em>Scaramouche<\/em><\/strong>, a swashbuckling novel <strong>set<\/strong> during the years of the <strong>French Revolution<\/strong>, which brought him <strong>worldwide success<\/strong>, followed the next year by <strong><em>Captain Blood<\/em><\/strong>. <strong>Another successful novel<\/strong>, written in <strong>1915<\/strong> and later reprinted, was <strong><em>The Sea Hawk<\/em><\/strong>.
