He was born<\/strong> in Jesi<\/strong> on April 29, 1875<\/strong>, to his father<\/strong> Vincenzo, from Jesi, and his English mother<\/strong> Anna Jellery, both opera singers<\/strong> who later became teachers. As a child, he moved<\/strong> with his family to Milan<\/strong>, and later emigrated to Switzerland<\/strong>, Portugal<\/strong>, and finally England<\/strong>, where he began his career as a journalist before making his debut<\/strong> as a writer of historical<\/strong> and adventure<\/strong> novels<\/strong>.<\/p>

In 1904<\/strong> he published The Knight of the Tavern<\/em><\/strong>, the first novel in a long series of works including fiction, plays, and essays. In 1921<\/strong> he released Scaramouche<\/em><\/strong>, a swashbuckling novel set<\/strong> during the years of the French Revolution<\/strong>, which brought him worldwide success<\/strong>, followed the next year by Captain Blood<\/em><\/strong>. Another successful novel<\/strong>, written in 1915<\/strong> and later reprinted, was The Sea Hawk<\/em><\/strong>. Several film adaptations<\/strong> were made of his works, including Captain Blood<\/em><\/strong> (1935<\/strong>), directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, The Sea Hawk<\/em><\/strong> (1940<\/strong>), also directed by Curtiz, and Scaramouche<\/em> (1952), directed by George Sidney and starring Stewart Granger, Eleanor Parker, and Janet Leigh.<\/p>

He died<\/strong> in Adelboden, Switzerland<\/strong>, on February 13, 1950<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
