He was born in Jesi<\/strong> on January 4, 1710<\/strong>. The nickname Pergolesi<\/em> <\/strong>came from his grandfather Francesco<\/strong>, a craftsman originally from Pergola<\/strong> who moved to Jesi in 1635. He soon showed a natural talent<\/strong> for music<\/strong>, taking his first lessons from Francesco Santi, director of the Cathedral Chapel. Thanks to the patronage<\/strong> of Marquis Cardolo Maria Pianetti, he was admitted<\/strong> to the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Ges\u00f9 Cristo in Naples<\/strong>, where he studied for five years.<\/p>

He gained European fame<\/strong> with “La serva padrona<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em>, an intermezzo from the opera “Il prigionier superbo<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em> (1733<\/strong>), which gave rise to Italian opera buffa<\/strong> and French comic opera, becoming an unmatched model of the genre. Among his other works are the musical comedy “Lo frate \u2019nnammurato<\/strong>“<\/em> (1732<\/strong>) and “Livietta e Tracollo<\/strong>“<\/em>, another intermezzo from “Adriano in Siria<\/strong>“<\/em> (1734<\/strong>). After moving to Rome in 1734, he composed the opera “L\u2019Olimpiade<\/strong>“<\/em>, performed in January 1735 on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio, and considered the most perfect of his serious works<\/strong>.<\/p>

Returning to Naples<\/strong>, Pergolesi composed\u00a0<\/strong> “Flaminio<\/strong>“; <\/em>a drama. As his health worsened<\/strong>\u2014likely due to tuberculosis<\/strong>\u2014he moved to Pozzuoli<\/strong> to be treated in a Franciscan convent. There, in the final months of his life, he composed<\/strong> his<\/strong> sacred masterpiece<\/strong>, the “Stabat Mater<\/strong>“<\/em> (1736<\/strong>). Pergolesi died<\/strong> at just 26 on March 16, 1736<\/strong>, in the Capuchin convent, and was buried among the poor in a common grave in the cathedral of Pozzuoli.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
