The Palio di San Floriano<\/strong>, a historical re-enactment<\/strong> involving Jesi and the Vallesina municipalities<\/strong>, takes place every year on the weekend after 4th<\/sup> May<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

The event recalls the town’s most important public ceremony<\/strong>, namely the presentation of the Pallio<\/strong>, a silk banner of various colours or decorations, by the Castelli del Contado<\/strong> (the current Vallesina villages) as a sign of submission<\/strong> to the town but also as an act of devotion<\/strong> to the patron saint.\u00a0<\/p>

Among the preparatory events to the Palio is the traditional \u2018Scampanada de San Fior\u00e0<\/strong>\u2019, which takes place every 4th<\/sup> May<\/strong>, St Florian’s Day, and consists of a foot race<\/strong> through the streets of the historic centre in which children ring the traditional terracotta bells<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

The Scampanada is inspired by the legend<\/strong> according to which the saint is challenged by the devil in a race of speed from the Gola della Rossa to the Castle of Jesi<\/strong> and, by drawing crosses along the route that slow the devil down, he wins by arriving first in the town greeted by the festive sound of bells<\/strong>.<\/p>

In the days that follow, the historic centre is filled with a typically medieval atmosphere<\/strong>: participants in mediaeval costumes<\/strong>, flag-wavers<\/strong>, archers<\/strong> and musicians parade<\/strong> along the 15th<\/sup>-century walls.\u00a0<\/p>

The streets fill with historical-themed taverns<\/strong>, where dishes inspired by the cuisine of the time<\/strong> are served.<\/p>

The highlight is the historical procession featuring<\/strong> the mayors of the Vallesina<\/strong> and the municipal banners<\/strong>, which reaches the Cathedral<\/strong> for the traditional offering<\/strong> of a candle to the Bishop, as a sign of respect for religious authority.<\/p>

Finally, the Palio itself<\/strong> takes place, with tournaments and medieval games<\/strong> that determine the winning town<\/strong>, which keeps the Palio for a year until the next edition.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
