Culture

Let's imagine a triangle. Let's write down the word "culture" at one vertex and the words "territory" and "industry" at the other two. The identity of our community with its historical coordinates is formed inside this imaginary space. The cultural life of Jesi has always been animated and rich in uncommon contents. The institutional activity of the three main cultural centres (the civic museums, the library and the theatre) combines with the activities carried out by a large number of cultural associations constituting the life blood of an open and plural society.

Over the centuries the Pinacoteca Civica of Palazzo Pianetti has changed from a mere container of works of art into a centre promoting culture, thus embracing the philosophy according to which a museum is not a container of works but rather an organisation meant to enhance, communicate and promote artworks and cultural activities. The civic art gallery has been promoting history of art with the help of the most important art writers, critics and researchers, and has always been attentive to the school's needs, organising educational workshops for primary school children and secondary school students. Thousands of young people visited the Pinacoteca Civica and the Studio per le Arti della Stampa (S.A.S.).

With the municipal historical archive and the archives of the most important noble families of Jesi, the Biblioteca Planettiana is an extraordinary place which preserves our memory. Housed in the Renaissance Palazzo della Signoria, it has been for years an important container of culture and a reservoir of history and civilization, as well as a hot house of activities meant to promote and diffuse the documentary heritage of our town through exhibitions and conferences. This library is also a meeting and learning place. Every day dozens of people, mostly university students but also students and scholars from all over the world, make use of an information centre of excellence for interlibrary loan. The new and very modern reading room provided with newspapers and periodicals is in a 15th-century room which was used as a salt storage area. It is no accident that the room which was once used to store salt is now a point of reference for preservation of culture and for reasarch as well as a meeting point and a place to socialize and study.

The theatre dedicated to Giovan Battista Pergolesi represents one of the most prestigious and well-established cultural realities in the whole region. It is the only "theatre of tradition" located in a town which is not a provincial capital. For over two hundred years it has been a point of reference for the cultural life of the town, a place for live performances (with its opera, theatre and concert seasons), as well as a vehicle to promote Jesi in Italy and in the world in the name of Pergolesi, one of the greatest geniuses in the history of music.
