Galleria degli stucchi

With an octagonal room that completes and enhances its perspective illusionism, the 70 meter-long Galleria degli Stucchi (gallery of stuccoes) represents one of the main attractions of Palazzo Pianetti as well as one of the clearest examples of the Rococo style in central Italy, worthy to be compared to the late Baroque in central Europe.

The stucco works, attributable to Giuseppe Tamanti, Giuseppe Simbeni and Andrea Mercoli, were made between 1766 and 1770.
The decoration of the doors, the windows, the parapets and the window shutters as well as the furniture began in 1771.
The furniture was made up of  half tables, sofas, pier glasses, carved stools, frames and tapestries. It was all mostly white with gilts and tints.

From 1771 to 1779 Giuseppe Ciferrri from L'Aquila was responsible of the painting.
Putti recalling the signs of the zodiac are portrayed in the panels of the vault, whereas images of allegories and lagoon scenes can be found all the way along the gallery.
Five landscapes are painted in the octagonal room, whereas the vault shows allegories of Justice, Force, Wisdom and Moderation, embellished with blue monochromes.
The intention to create a balance between elements of sculpture and elements of painting is clear: stuccoes and colours, bas-reliefs and decorations merge harmoniously.

The Galleria seems structured according to two regular modules. Through a double symmetry - transversal and longitudinal - the elements are placed according to an idealogical and symbolical order related to new Enlightenment thinking. Thus, the excesses and theatricality of the Baroque style are controlled and lessened by the new 18th-century dictates. Stuccoes and tempera paintings create an elegant allegorical path, perfectly fitted in the philosophy lying beneath the artistic project, which hides among the symbols the man's journey through time and space towards knowledge. Time passing is represented on the walls and the vault: hours, days, months and seasons, whereas space is referred to in the cycle of the primary elements of nature and the continents. The man's journey, confirmed also in the sea and lagoon scenes, is carried out naturally under the aegis of  the liberal arts: painting, sculpture, architecture and music made in stucco.

Restoration works were carried out on the gallery in 2004-2005; they revealed the original chromatic layout able to create the exact elegant and intellectual 18th-century atmosphere noble and important Jesi families used to live in. These works enabled to unveil all the false marbles in the door frames and windows and to remove the inconsistent mousey-grey from the baseboard.

Other interesting discoveries were the ovals marked by elegant letters found in the walls of the galleria and of the exhedra, hidden under several layers of green colour put during the restoration works carried out in the seventies. These new restoration works aimed at offering visitors the most intimate and accurate comprehension of the Galleria degli Succhi; the precise study of the materials enabled to bring back its original shapes and colours, "revealing the powdered visage of the distant Rococo season".
